For over seven years, the “Lash Guru” Karen Hall based in Paphos, Cyprus tells us some lash tips about perfecting her lash application technique – with the intent of helping women feel like the most beautiful version of themselves.
People have wanted longer, thicker eyelashes for probably as long as mirrors have existed. To feed the need for lash girth and length, versions of false lashes have existed since the 1800s, but really took off in the 1960s when strips of adhesive lashes became available for single day use.
Lash extensions are different from false lashes. False lashes are usually strips or small clusters of lashes that you attach directly to your skin at the base of your real lashes, and are meant to be worn for a day and removed, you can buy in department stores i.e. Boots and they are DIY. Lash extensions are single false lashes that are glued directly onto your natural lash, not to the skin on your lid and can last for four to six weeks applied by a fully trained and accredited eye lash technician.
Lash extensions come in materials ranging from silk to mink to synthetics and generally look more realistic if they’re a bit more matte in color and aren’t too shiny. Silk lashes tend to look more dramatic while mink looks more natural. The most natural look overall occurs when I add dimension by texturizing the lashes using a combination of lengths, degrees and tapers.
To find an artist, you must start with personal recommendations if possible. Once you decide you like someone’s work, call them. I love to be able to talk on the phone with new clients to explain the whole process and answer any queries.
I have a large selection of thicknesses, lengths and curls to create the look you desire. I take great care and consideration to stay in the “safe zone” using the correct lashes for each individual’s naturals.
On arrival at the salon and completing your personal client record card and consultation, you will be invited to lie on a comfy couch for approximately 90 mins, or just take what is known in the biz as a “lash nap.” It’s a really chilled procedure. I apply a drop of adhesive to the lash extension and attach it to each individual natural lash a millimeter or two away from your lid with tweezers. Repeat x 200.
The extensions will feel like your regular lashes. You won’t feel any tugging or a sense of your lashes being weighed down. Nothing will be touching your skin, they will be soft, flexible and you can move them. They will feel natural except longer and thicker. No Mascara is required!
The treatment takes approximately 90 mins. Follow up infill appointments, which you’ll need after about two to three weeks and take about an hour. Generally lash extensions are only applied to the upper lid. Lash extensions are the ultimate low maintenance luxury.
If eyelash extensions are not for you, I also offer LVL lashes and HD Brows treatment.
LVL straightens your natural eyelashes at the root, so unlike a traditional lash perm it creates the effect of longer, lifted lashes in just 40 minutes. They’ll stay that way for six to eight weeks. The results are immediate, plus the added lash tint creates a mascara-type effect so you are always ready to go, a great treatment for those who do not want the maintenance of lash extensions.
HD Brows is a seven step eyebrow shaping treatment that focuses on shape and design. It involves a combination of techniques, including tinting, waxing and threading, using specialist HD Brow products.
Karen’s salon is situated inside Renoir Hair Studio, in the heart of the tourist area, within easy reach for all hotels and holiday accommodation.
